Sunday Night TV

November 14, 2011

Sunday night television is my “must see TV”.  And, I can not wait for tonight’s episodes of Dexter and Homeland.  Two of the smartest shows on television, in my humble opinion.

I have been with Dexter since day 1, and remain just as loyal and enthusiastic about the show since that first incredible season.  If you’re not watching it, you should be, and here are 5 reasons why you should start watching Dexter NOW.  (And, why you should definitely watch the past 5 seasons.)

Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan.

1.  Michael C. Hall is flawless as Dexter.  There is no one who is able to emote so much with such little expression.

2.  You get to see some freaky ass shit.

3.  Jennifer Carpenter’s character, Deb Morgan, offers the most creative use of potty words available to the English language, and then some.

4.  It’s funny.  That’s right.  This show about a serial killer with a code of ethics who only kills other deserving murderers, is darkly comedic.  There are moments of subtle and not-so-subtle hilarity.

5.  It’s a show with heart, smarts, and great kick-ass writing.

Dexter is on Showtime, at 9:00pm Eastern Standard Time.

Now for Homeland.  This is my new theatrical obsession.  Quite honestly, the show rocks.  And, if you missed the first four episodes, there’s more than enough time to catch up.  This show couldn’t be more of the Zeitgeist (one of my favorite words).

Claire Danes plays Carrie Mathison a CIA agent who borders on the neurotic, compulsive and myopic when it comes to our national security issues centered on terrorism.   Where others see a homegrown hero, she sees a national terror threat, and is determined to prove everyone else wrong.

She is amazing.  And, I’ve never been a huge Claire Danes fan.  She always kind of annoyed me, especially on My So Called Life.  Well, she has found her home.

Carrie (Claire Danes) and Saul (Mandy Patinkin) in Homeland.

Damian Lewis as Sgt. Nick Brody

Here are my 5 reasons why you MUST watch this fan-fucking-tastic show.

1.  Claire Danes is incredible as the psychologically and emotionally charged Carrie Mathison.

2.  Damian Lewis.  Period.  Damian Lewis.  He is Sgt. Nick Brody and he is insanely good.  His ability to keep us guessing is unreal. (You know, he’s really British.)

3.  Claire Danes and Damian Lewis together.  They are electric.

4.  Mandy Patinkin.  Who doesn’t love themselves a little Mandy Patinkin?  He plays Saul Berenson, and is perfectly cast as Carrie’s serious and morally sound CIA superior.

5.  It makes you uncomfortable, which is a good thing.  Because, if 9/11 taught us anything, it’s that we should never be too comfortable.

Every episode plays out like a mini-movie thriller and I am hooked.  And, I promise, you will be too.

Homeland follows Dexter on Sunday nights, on Showtime at 10:00pm Eastern Standard Time.

I have 8 minutes until my Sunday night TV starts.  The kids are in bed, the kitchen is clean, and my glass of Sauvignon Blanc is full, so I’m ready to go.

Will you be watching?

These are my two favorite shows as well. I’ve watched every episode of Dexter. Hard to believe that, after all these years, the show is still so good. And creepy!
